Bro Machno sits in a steep, wooded valley in Conwy, North Wales, following the course of the River Machno and comprising small settlements such as Penmachno. The area lies on the fringe of Snowdonia and is noted for its rugged river scenery, old stone bridges and lanes that give it a remote, unspoilt feel while being a short drive from Betws-y-Coed.
Historically the community has been rural and slate- and farm-based, and its vernacular chapels and former quarry remains speak of that past; today it remains a largely Welsh-speaking, close-knit place where outdoor recreation and low-key tourism - walkers, anglers and cyclists - help the local economy alongside agriculture and small-scale heritage activity. Local social life centres on village halls and churches, with an emphasis on maintaining traditional rural customs and landscapes.
