The unitary authority of Conwy sits on the north coast of Wales, stretching from sandy beaches and Victorian seaside towns such as Llandudno and Colwyn Bay to the uplands of Snowdonia and the dramatic estuary of the River Conwy. The area mixes coastal promenades and the Great Orme headland with rural valleys and mountains, so it’s popular for outdoor activities, heritage visits and day-trippers from nearby cities.
At its heart is the medieval walled town of Conwy, dominated by Conwy Castle and town walls that form part of a UNESCO World Heritage designation; the tiny painted house on the quay is a famously quirky sight. Tourism drives much of the local economy alongside agriculture and light industry, and there’s a strong Welsh-language and community culture; Victorian engineering landmarks such as Telford’s suspension bridge and Stephenson’s railway bridge underline its historic transport links.
