Pontrhydyfen is a small former industrial village tucked into the steep, wooded slopes of the Afan Valley in Neath Port Talbot, Wales. It sits where lanes follow gorges and tributaries into the River Afan, and the surroundings are notable for dramatic waterfalls, wooded hills and a series of Victorian stone viaducts that punctuate the valleyscape.
Historically the village grew up around ironworks and coal mining, and while the pits have gone the industrial heritage is still visible in ruins and transport features; today the local economy leans on outdoor tourism and mountain biking in nearby Afan Forest Park, alongside a close-knit community identity. Culturally it punches above its weight as the childhood home of Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant, which adds a dash of fame to an otherwise quietly rural place.
