Coelbren in Powys is a small village on the edge of the uplands at the head of the Swansea Valley, close to the western flanks of the Brecon Beacons. Surrounded by moorland and pasture, it’s a quiet rural spot that nonetheless sits within easy driving distance of nearby places such as Ystradgynlais and the border with Neath Port Talbot.
The village has nineteenth‑century roots in transport and extractive industries and you can still make out remnants of former railway and industrial infrastructure; today its economy is mainly agricultural with some commuting and small local businesses. Socially it’s a small, close‑knit community with village halls and chapels remaining focal points, and its location appeals to walkers and anyone after access to the upland landscapes of the Brecon Beacons.
