Ystradgynlais is a town in Powys, Wales, tucked into the upper Swansea Valley on the banks of the River Tawe. It sits near the fringes of the Brecon Beacons and close to the border with Neath Port Talbot, making it a larger local centre for a string of hill villages and a handy base for walking and hill country recreation.
Historically the town expanded with 19th‑ and 20th‑century coal and heavy industry, and today its economy is a mix of light manufacturing, local retail and commuters to nearby centres. There’s a strong community identity, with Welsh language and cultural traditions visible in choirs, local clubs and the town’s rugby scene, while the surrounding landscape continues to shape social life and leisure choices.
