Abercynon is an electoral ward and community in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales, sitting at the confluence of the River Taff and the River Cynon in the heart of the Cynon Valley. It grew up as a coal‑mining and railway settlement serving the South Wales Coalfield, so traces of that industrial past – terraced streets, former pit sites and remnants of rail infrastructure – still define much of the landscape.
Today the ward mixes residential areas with pockets of regeneration, backed by rail and road links into Cardiff and other valley towns. The surrounding hills give good countryside access and the popular Taff Trail passes nearby, while local sport and community groups keep a strong sense of place despite the economic changes since the pits closed.
