Maerdy is a former coal‑mining community high in the steep-sided Rhondda Fach valley within Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales. Perched towards the head of the valley it has a strong upland feel with walking routes and sweeping views over the surrounding Rhondda valleys, and retains the rugged landscape shaped by the industrial era.
Historically part of the South Wales Coalfield, Maerdy is known for a proud mining heritage and a tradition of trade union and left‑wing politics - so much so that it earned a rough nickname as a stronghold of labour activism. Since pit closures the community has shifted towards residential and commuter life while keeping cultural anchors such as local clubs, rugby and efforts at regeneration that celebrate its industrial past.
