Ynyshir sits in the narrow Rhondda Fach valley of Rhondda Cynon Taf in South Wales, its name coming from the Welsh for "long island". The village occupies the valley floor beside the River Rhondda and is framed by steep, wooded slopes, giving it a compact, sheltered feel and strong visual links to the coalfield landscape that shaped the area.
Like many Rhondda communities it expanded rapidly in the 19th century with coal mining and rows of terraced housing; the decline of the pits in the 20th century brought economic and social challenges but also a resilient local identity. Today there are ongoing regeneration efforts, active community groups, local shops and leisure activities centred on rugby and football, and many residents now work beyond the valley while retaining close ties to local history and culture.
