Townhill is a compact, largely residential ward perched on the steep slopes just northwest of Swansea city centre, giving many streets fine panoramic views across Swansea Bay and the docks. Its name is plain and literal - the neighbourhood sits above the town - and the area is characterised by tightly knit terraces and a mix of council and private housing dating mainly from the 20th century.
Socially and culturally Townhill shares much with neighbouring Mayhill: a strong local identity, active community groups and a sense of grassroots pride that has driven small-scale regeneration and neighbourhood projects. Economically it reflects the post-industrial character of the wider city, with local schools, community centres and volunteer initiatives playing a big role in everyday life while aiming to tackle the kinds of social and economic challenges common to former industrial hubs.
