St. Athan is a village in the largely rural Vale of Glamorgan in south Wales, a few miles inland from the Bristol Channel and roughly 12 miles west of Cardiff. The landscape is typical of the Vale, with rolling farmland and hedgerows, and the village retains a notable medieval parish church dedicated to St Tathan that hints at its long history.
The unmistakable local landmark is the former RAF airfield, now known as MOD St Athan, whose presence has shaped the economy and identity of the area; aerospace, engineering and defence-related businesses and the nearby Bro Tathan business park are important employers. Despite this industrial thread, St. Athan remains a small, community-minded place with village halls, pubs and clubs that keep a strong social life.
