Map of the UK

West Aberthaw in the Vale of Glamorgan is a small coastal hamlet on the south Wales shore at the mouth of the River Thaw, looking out over the Bristol Channel. The shoreline is a mix of limestone cliffs, rocky foreshore and mudflats that form part of the Glamorgan Heritage Coast, making it a good spot for birdwatching and for those interested in coastal geology and fossils.

The settlement’s character has long been shaped by heavy industry - notably the nearby Aberthaw cement works and Aberthaw Power Station - which provided local employment and left visible industrial archaeology such as jetties, kilns and ash tips. With industry scaled back, the area now combines agricultural and coastal recreation uses with an active interest in conservation and occasional redevelopment, and retains a small, locally connected community.
