Bradford is a metropolitan district in West Yorkshire, sitting on the western edge of the Pennines where the steep valleys of the River Aire and the Bradford Beck meet the urban centre. The district includes a mix of former mill towns and suburban settlements such as Keighley, Shipley, Ilkley and the model village of Saltaire, giving a contrast between gritty Victorian terraces and nearby moorland scenery.
Historically it grew fast in the 19th century as a global hub for wool and worsted textiles, leaving a rich Victorian architectural legacy and industrial heritage. Saltaire is a UNESCO World Heritage Site built by Titus Salt, and the district hosts cultural landmarks, museums and theatres that reflect its industrial past and creative present.
Today Bradford is known for its cultural diversity and lively food scene, with strong South Asian communities shaping much of the city’s social life. The local economy has shifted from large-scale textiles to a mix of manufacturing, services, education and creative industries, anchored by institutions such as the University of Bradford, while regeneration projects and heritage attractions like the steam line around Keighley and the Worth Valley help attract visitors.
