Waterbeach is a fenland village and civil parish in South Cambridgeshire, Cambridgeshire, sitting on the edge of the fens about six miles north of Cambridge beside the River Cam and the historic Roman channel known as the Car Dyke. It has a regular railway station on the Fen Line linking Cambridge and Ely, making it a popular commuter base while retaining a strong agricultural character.
The village has an interesting military and monastic past: the former RAF Waterbeach airfield and later barracks shaped the local economy for much of the 20th century and are now the focus of large-scale redevelopment proposals, while nearby Denny Abbey and other archaeological finds hint at much older settlement. Today Waterbeach combines active community life with shops, clubs and riverside moorings, balancing new housing and business growth with its fenland landscape and history.
