Annfield Plain is a former coalfield community on the upland plateau of County Durham, situated between the industrial town of Consett and the market town of Stanley. The ward occupies high ground overlooking parts of the Derwent Valley and provides easy access to reservoir and moorland walks towards the North Pennines, so it mixes village streets with semi‑rural fringes.
Historically the area grew up around coal mining and still wears that industrial legacy in its terraced housing and social clubs; since pit closures many residents commute to nearby towns while local shops, schools and volunteer groups keep community life active. The landscape bears traces of its past but also offers green spaces used for walking and cycling, giving the place a resilient, working‑class character with a quieter, residential feel.
