Lanchester is a village and civil parish in County Durham, England, situated roughly eight miles west of Durham in the Browney valley. It sits beside the River Browney and is surrounded by rolling farmland and wooded valleys, giving a rural character while remaining within easy reach of larger towns by local roads.
Lanchester is known for the nearby Roman fort Longovicium and a medieval parish church, signs of a long and layered history; later centuries brought agricultural and industrial influences common to the region. Today the village retains a strong community feel with local shops, a village hall and clubs, and is popular with walkers exploring the surrounding Durham countryside and historic sites.
