Evenwood is a small former mining village in County Durham, set in the gentle, rolling countryside of the Gaunless Valley between Bishop Auckland and Spennymoor. Its position gives a rural feel while remaining within commuting distance of the city of Durham and local market towns, so it combines village life with reasonable access to services and transport links.
Historically shaped by coal mining, the built landscape still bears traces of that industrial past in terraces and former pit sites, and the community retains a strong local identity with clubs, events and small businesses. Today it is largely residential, valued for its countryside walks, views and the close-knit social life that replaced the old colliery economy after closures in the 20th century.
