Thornley is a village and civil parish in County Durham, lying in the former coalfield of east Durham close to Wheatley Hill and Peterlee, and within easy driving distance of the city of Durham and the Durham coast around Seaham. Its setting is typical of the area, with stretches of farmland and pockets of post‑industrial landscape where spoil heaps and reclamation schemes sit alongside rows of former miners' terraces.
Historically the village grew through coal mining in the 19th and 20th centuries, so its identity is shaped by that industrial past: memorials, community organisations and former pit infrastructure remain important to local life. Since pit closures the place has experienced economic change, with many residents commuting to nearby towns, while local social life tends to centre on village halls, clubs and grassroots initiatives that keep a strong sense of community.
