Finningley is a small, mainly rural ward in the northern part of the metropolitan borough of Doncaster, set in low-lying agricultural country close to the A1(M) and the market town of Bawtry. The landscape is shaped by arable fields and drainage channels such as the River Torne, and the ward’s location makes it a quiet commuter and farming community with easy road links toward Doncaster and Sheffield.
The area is best known for its aviation heritage: the former RAF base at RAF Finningley later became Doncaster Sheffield Airport, bringing national attention through military use and airshows and providing local employment until the airport’s closure in 2022. That legacy, together with continuing farming, a compact village community centred on the church and village hall, and ongoing redevelopment interest on former airfield land, gives the ward a mix of historic, social and economic threads uncommon in such a small place.
