The Metropolitan Borough of Dudley is a local authority area in the West Midlands of England, created in 1974 and centred on the large town of Dudley. It embraces a number of neighbouring towns such as Stourbridge, Halesowen and Brierley Hill, and forms the historic heart of the Black Country with a strong industrial heritage in coal, ironworking and chain-making.
Notable features include the hilltop ruins of Dudley Castle and the adjoining Dudley Zoo, extensive canal networks and surviving industrial archaeology, while the post‑industrial economy is marked by modern retail and service hubs such as the Merry Hill shopping complex in Brierley Hill. The borough retains a distinct cultural identity linked to its manufacturing past, local dialect and community events, even as it has diversified economically in recent decades.
