Hessle is a riverside town in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, sitting on the north bank of the River Humber just to the west of Kingston upon Hull. Its most striking landmark is the Humber Bridge, the iconic suspension bridge opened in 1981 that for a time held the record for the longest single span in the world.
Originally a small medieval settlement that expanded in the 19th century with improved transport and local industry, Hessle today is largely a commuter and suburban centre with a mix of independent shops, pubs and light industry. The Hessle Foreshore and riverside walks are popular with locals for views of the estuary and bridge, and the town retains a strong community feel with clubs, events and local volunteer groups.
