Irthlingborough is a town and electoral ward in North Northamptonshire, sitting on the floodplain of the River Nene between Wellingborough and Rushden. Its setting by the river and the legacy of former gravel and stone workings give a mix of low-lying wet meadows, flooded pits and compact town streets; many of the old pits are now valued for wildlife and leisure, notably Irthlingborough Lakes and Meadows.
Historically the area grew on quarrying and light industry and more recently has become largely residential with local shops and small businesses, while still serving as a commuter base for larger centres. It also has a sporting and cultural footnote as the former home of Rushden & Diamonds and their stadium at Nene Park, and the community retains a blend of Victorian buildings and post‑war housing with active local groups and green spaces.
