North Northamptonshire

Unitary authority in England

Coordinates:52.42, -0.62
OS grid ref:SP 93 80

North Northamptonshire is a unitary authority in England created on 1 April 2021 by merging the former districts of Corby, Kettering, Wellingborough and much of East Northamptonshire. It sits in the heart of the East Midlands, a mix of market towns and rural countryside with larger urban centres such as Rushden and the well‑known boarding school town of Oundle. Its central location and road links make it part commuter belt for nearby centres like Peterborough, Northampton and Leicester.

The area is notable for its varied landscape - the River Nene and Nene Valley, remnants of Rockingham Forest and a patchwork of farmland - alongside historic country houses and estates such as Althorp, Boughton House and Rockingham Castle. Economically there are contrasts: Corby’s steel and heavy‑industry legacy has been supplemented by modern manufacturing, logistics and retail (notably Rushden Lakes), while many villages retain a strong agricultural and heritage character. Socially the unitary shows a mix of post‑industrial regeneration and prosperous rural communities, reflecting its long history within Northamptonshire.
