Higham Ferrers is a compact market town in North Northamptonshire, set on the banks of the River Nene. Its compact historic centre, with narrow streets and traditional stone and brick buildings, sits amid the gentle agricultural landscape of the Nene valley and makes it feel distinctly more old‑world than the newer towns nearby.
The town has a strong medieval pedigree: the imposing St Mary’s Church and the remnants of Chichele College, founded by Archbishop Henry Chichele in the 15th century, are focal points for local history. Today Higham Ferrers supports a mix of independent shops, small businesses and light industry and functions in part as a commuter base for larger centres such as Northampton and Peterborough, while retaining an active civic life with heritage groups and traditional community events.
