The area centred on Settle sits in the western corner of North Yorkshire and takes in the distinctive limestone fell Penyghent, one of the three peaks that dominate the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Penyghent rises to about 694 metres and is a magnet for walkers, with its steep scarps, limestone pavement and wide views over the dales; the town of Settle itself is a traditional stone-built market town whose character was shaped by medieval trade and Victorian railway expansion.
Locally the economy mixes hill farming with a strong tourism and hospitality scene, bolstered by walkers, cyclists and train visitors on the historic Settle–Carlisle line. The community punches above its weight culturally, with lively arts, music and market events, independent shops and pubs, and a countryside that preserves both natural features and centuries of rural life.
