Thornton in Lonsdale is a small, largely rural civil parish in North Yorkshire, set in the broad Lonsdale - the valley of the River Lune - close to the county boundaries with Lancashire and Cumbria and on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. Its landscape is typically limestone country: rolling pastures, dry‑stone walls and occasional limestone scars that make it popular with walkers and anyone seeking quieter countryside away from larger towns.
The settlement has medieval roots and today is characterised by dispersed farms, stone houses and a small, tight‑knit community whose economy is still largely agricultural (sheep and cattle) while relying on nearby market towns for services. Local interest centres on the traditional rural architecture, long field patterns and easy access to well‑known local walking routes and neighbouring villages such as Kirkby Lonsdale and Ingleton.
