Map of the UK

Barnack is a small, largely rural ward on the old Lincolnshire limestone ridge to the south of Peterborough and close to Stamford, sitting within the City of Peterborough unitary area but with historic links to the old Soke of Peterborough. The ridge gives the village fine views over surrounding agricultural land and the character is decidedly villagey: stone cottages, farmed fields and a compact community that many residents combine with commuting into nearby towns.

Its claim to wider fame is geological and historic - local oolitic limestone, known as Barnack stone, was quarried here in medieval times and used in many important churches and cathedrals, including Peterborough Cathedral and buildings as far afield as Ely. The disused quarries survive as the nationally important nature reserve Barnack Hills & Holes, a classic example of ancient limestone grassland rich in wildflowers and butterflies, while the village church and several listed buildings speak to a long and well‑preserved local history. Economically the area is still rooted in farming, with a modest local services base and a community active in conservation and village life.
