Theale is a large village and civil parish in West Berkshire, England, sitting on the north bank of the Kennet and alongside the Kennet and Avon Canal about four miles west of Reading. Its riverside setting and location just off the A4 and close to the M4 give it a slightly suburban, commuter feel while still occupying a distinct riverside landscape.
Historically Theale grew around the canal and later the railway, and today combines a strong local community with pockets of industry and business parks plus retail and logistics that serve the wider area; the village is served by Theale railway station with local trains to Reading and Newbury. It’s also noted for nearby former gravel pits and treatment lagoons – often called the Theale Lagoons – which have become important nature spots for birdwatchers and add an unexpectedly wild edge to village life, even as many residents commute into London and the Thames Valley.
