Meare sits on the flat peatlands of the Somerset Levels, a short distance from Glastonbury, and is defined by its low-lying marshy landscape, drainage ditches and seasonal floods. The area was once dominated by the shallow Meare Pool, managed for medieval fishing and eeling, and today the surrounding wetlands and reserves attract birdwatchers and walkers interested in the region’s distinctive wildlife and archaeology.
Historically the village has strong links with Glastonbury Abbey - remnants of manor buildings and medieval fishery works testify to that past - while the modern economy is largely rural, centred on agriculture and small-scale local services. Meare retains a quiet village character with a green, community life and easy access to the unique cultural landscape of the Levels.
