Shepton Mallet is a historic market town and civil parish in Somerset, set on the banks of the River Sheppey at the foot of the Mendip Hills. It developed from Roman and medieval roots into a centre for wool, cider-making and limestone quarrying, and its Market Place and church still reflect that layered past.
The town is noted for its attractive stone buildings and the former prison complex, which remained a striking landmark until its closure in 2013. Today Shepton Mallet combines independent shops, light industry and regular markets with a lively community calendar, serving surrounding villages and functioning as a convenient base for commuters to places such as Bath and Bristol.
