Butterton is a small, upland village and civil parish in the Staffordshire Moorlands district of Staffordshire, England, sitting on the western fringe of the Peak District. Perched amid moorland plateaux and rolling pastures near Axe Edge Moor, it has a dispersed pattern of stone cottages and farms and is overlooked by distinctive gritstone features such as The Roaches, with the higher village of Flash and the little hamlet of Onecote not far away; the market town of Leek serves as the nearest service centre.
Historically the community drew on hill farming, small-scale quarrying and some mining, and today the economy is a mix of agriculture and rural tourism, with walkers and cyclists attracted to the moorland scenery and quiet lanes. Socially it remains a small, close-knit place with a village hall and community activities that revolve around farming seasons and seasonal events, giving it the feel of a traditional Peak-edge settlement rather than a commuter suburb.
