Ulverston sits on the Furness peninsula in Westmorland and Furness, just south of the Lakeland fells and close to Morecambe Bay and Coniston Water. The town is dominated by Hoad Hill and its quirky Hoad Monument, a lighthouse‑style folly with wide views across the bay and the Lake District skyline.
Once a market and industrial centre with mills, ironworks and a short canal to the bay, Ulverston has retained a compact historic centre and now mixes light industry with tourism, independent shops and a lively arts scene. It’s well known for community events - notably the Laurel and Hardy festival celebrating Stan Laurel, who was born locally, and the colourful Lantern Festival - which give the town a strong civic identity and year‑round visitor appeal.
