Ulverston is a compact market town and electoral ward on the Furness peninsula in Westmorland and Furness, sitting close to the southern edge of the Lake District and overlooking Morecambe Bay. It’s dominated by the conical Hoad Hill topped by the distinctive Hoad Monument, and the town retains a mix of cobbled streets, Georgian and Victorian buildings with a lively central market square.
Locally known for being the birthplace of comedian Stan Laurel, the town has a surprising cultural life for its size - an annual Laurel & Hardy celebration, regular markets, independent shops, cafes and artisan food producers. Historically important as a small industrial and trading hub (with the older Ulverston Canal linking it to the coast), it now balances light industry and agriculture with a steady stream of tourists using it as a gateway to walking and outdoor activities in the surrounding countryside.
