Blantyre is a ward in South Lanarkshire centred on the historic Clyde-side town of the same name, sitting not far from the River Clyde and within easy commuting distance of Glasgow. It has a mixed urban character of Victorian terraces, post-war housing and modern estates, with decent rail and road links via Blantyre railway station and nearby motorways that make it popular with commuters.
Historically the community grew around coal mining and heavy industry and still bears that industrial heritage, including the memory of a tragic 19th-century pit disaster and being the birthplace of the explorer David Livingstone; in recent decades the local economy has shifted towards services, light industry and retail while regeneration and community projects aim to improve facilities. Green spaces and heritage attractions close by - for example Chatelherault country park - give residents easy access to countryside despite the ward’s suburban feel.
