Armadale is a former mining and shale‑oil town in West Lothian, Scotland, located in the Central Belt roughly between Edinburgh and Glasgow. Its 19th‑century growth was driven by coal and shale industries, and the town still shows that industrial heritage alongside surrounding farmland and pockets of newer housing.
Today Armadale functions largely as a commuter and local‑service town with shops, community groups and amateur sport, and benefited from the reopening of the Bathgate–Airdrie rail link which improved rail access to the cities. Regeneration projects and access to nearby countryside and cycle routes have given it a mix of industrial history and more rural leisure opportunities.
