Blaengarw is a former mining village tucked into the upper reaches of the Garw Valley in Bridgend County Borough, Wales. The name literally means the head of the River Garw, and the village sits in a steep-sided valley of moorland and wooded slopes typical of the South Wales valleys, a short drive from Bridgend and the M4 corridor.
Like many communities in the South Wales Coalfield, Blaengarw grew around coal mining and felt the social and economic impact when pits closed, but it has a strong local identity and has seen community-led regeneration in recent decades. Today it’s known for its visible mining heritage, active community centres and events, and good access to valley walking and outdoor recreation, alongside efforts to celebrate local Welsh culture.
