Pontycymer is a small former mining village tucked into the steep sided Garw Valley in the county borough of Bridgend, Wales. Its Welsh name literally refers to a bridge at a confluence of streams, and the village sits amid classic South Wales valley scenery with winding lanes, terraced housing and easy access to riverside walks and ridgeline views.
Like many communities in the Valleys, Pontycymer grew rapidly during the 19th‑century coal boom and still carries a strong industrial and social heritage - memorials, former pit sites and close‑knit community groups mark that history. Since the decline of deep mining the local economy has shifted towards commuting and small businesses, while sport, local clubs and regeneration projects help sustain village life and a continuing sense of community identity.
