Maesteg East sits on the eastern side of the former mining town of Maesteg in Bridgend, Wales, occupying much of the slopes of the Llynfi Valley. The ward is a mix of dense residential streets, pockets of reclaimed industrial land and open hillside, so residents have easy access to countryside walks while still being connected to nearby towns by road and rail.
Like much of the valley it has a strong working‑class heritage from coal and ironworking, a visible Welsh cultural presence and community life centred on chapels, community centres and the local rugby club. Recent regeneration has improved amenities and housing, but the area still faces the familiar social and economic challenges of post‑industrial communities, with local festivals and grassroots projects playing a big part in keeping local identity alive.
