Abergwynfi is a small former mining village in the upper reaches of the Afan Valley, within the county borough of Neath Port Talbot in Wales. Perched where steep woodland and upland moor meet, it overlooks the River Afan and sits beside the extensive trails of Afan Forest Park, making it a well-known spot for walkers and mountain bikers; the neighbouring settlement of Blaengwynfi shares the valley’s industrial and social heritage.
Historically part of the South Wales Coalfield, Abergwynfi retains the feel of a tight-knit community shaped by mining, with many local regeneration and community projects since the collieries closed. Today the local economy leans on forestry, outdoor tourism and small-scale services, and the village is often appreciated for its dramatic landscape, quiet rural character and strong community identity.
