Garw Valley sits in the northern part of Bridgend in south Wales, following the course of the River Garw as it cuts between steep, green hills. The valley includes traditional settlements such as Blaengarw and Pontycymer down towards Brynmenyn, and offers a mix of quiet lanes, footpaths and upland scenery that make it popular for walkers and outdoor enthusiasts exploring the South Wales valleys.
Historically the valley was a coal-mining community and that industrial heritage is still visible in terraces, former pit sites and local museums; the loss of the collieries prompted economic change and a focus on community-led regeneration. Today the area combines a strong local identity and voluntary activity with small businesses and commuting to nearby towns, while cultural life revolves around village halls, clubs and annual events that reflect the valley’s working-class and Welsh roots.
