Gwynfi and Croeserw lie high in the steep-sided valleys of Neath Port Talbot, on the western edge of the Afan Valley. The area is strikingly rural for its proximity to industry, with moorland and wooded slopes falling to narrow valley floors and a network of trails and forestry tracks that link into Afan Forest Park, making it popular with walkers and mountain bikers and offering long views down towards the coast.
Like many communities in the South Wales valleys, Gwynfi and Croeserw grew with 19th- and 20th-century coal mining and railway development; the pits have closed, leaving visible industrial remnants and a strong local memory of that era. The economy today is a mix of local services, commuting to nearby towns such as Port Talbot and Neath, and an increasing focus on outdoor tourism and community regeneration projects, while Welsh language and cultural traditions continue to shape local identity.
