Tongwynlais is a small village and community on the northern edge of Cardiff in Wales, tucked into the wooded Taff Gorge beside the River Taff and close to the A470. Its most striking landmark is Castell Coch, a Victorian Gothic Revival rebuild on medieval foundations that draws visitors and gives the area a dramatic, fairytale skyline; the surrounding hills and trails make it popular for walkers and cyclists on the Taff Trail corridor.
Historically the settlement grew with Cardiff’s 19th-century industrial expansion and the local quarrying and mining economy, but today it is largely a residential, commuter community with a small local centre and an active village life. Tourism linked to the castle and outdoor recreation brings occasional economic activity, while strong local groups and events help maintain a close-knit social atmosphere despite its proximity to the city.
