Garnant sits in the heart of the Amman Valley in Carmarthenshire, Wales, a former coal-mining village that nestles along the River Amman beneath the rolling hills of the Black Mountain and close to the Brecon Beacons. The landscape still shows its industrial past in terraces and old pit sites, but has softened into green corridors, walking routes and reclaimed open spaces that attract walkers and cyclists as well as locals enjoying the rural scenery.
Locally there’s a strong sense of community and Welsh identity: bilingual signs, chapel and choir traditions, and grassroots organisations driving regeneration and small-scale enterprise. While the collieries closed long ago, heritage trails, mining memorials and community events keep that history visible, and the village now combines commuter links with a quieter, community-focused economy.
