Alltwen is a small village in the Swansea Valley within the county borough of Neath Port Talbot in Wales. Lying close to the neighbouring town of Pontardawe beside the River Tawe, it occupies a sloping site with wooded hills and footpaths that give pleasant views across the valley and easy access to the surrounding countryside and to Swansea. The name Alltwen comes from the Welsh for "white slope".
Historically the locality shared in the Swansea Valley’s industrial past - coal, iron and tinplate industries shaped local employment and housing - but today Alltwen is largely a residential, commuter community with local shops, chapels and a close-knit social life. It retains a quieter, semi-rural character while serving as a convenient base for exploring the South Wales Valleys and nearby towns.
