Cwmavon is a semi-rural parish in Neath Port Talbot, sitting at the lower end of the Afan Valley where settlements follow the course of the River Afan. The landscape is characterised by steep valley sides, former industrial terraces and easy access to both the coast at Port Talbot and the upland trails of Afan Forest Park, which make the area popular with walkers and mountain bikers.
Historically the community grew up around 18th- and 19th-century coal and iron working, and traces of that industrial archaeology survive alongside later Victorian housing. The decline of heavy industry, including employment centred on the nearby Port Talbot steelworks, has shifted the local economy towards commuting, tourism and small-scale services; socially the parish retains a strong sense of local identity, with active clubs, chapels and community events reflecting its industrial and rural heritage.
