The town of Pontardawe sits in the upper Swansea Valley on the banks of the River Tawe, within Neath Port Talbot in Wales. It expanded rapidly in the 19th century with coal, iron and tinplate industries, and that industrial heritage is still visible in converted mills, Victorian terraces and the linear high street.
Today Pontardawe is a local service and cultural hub with independent shops, cafés and a lively programme at the Pontardawe Arts Centre. The town retains a strong community spirit - from local rugby at Pontardawe RFC to bilingual events - and offers easy access to riverside walks and surrounding uplands, while many residents commute to nearby Swansea for work.
