Porth sits in the heart of the steep-sided valleys of the Rhondda in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales, and its name - meaning "gate" in Welsh - reflects its historic role as an entrance to the South Wales coalfields. The town grew rapidly in the 19th century with the development of numerous collieries and served as a commercial and transport hub for the surrounding communities; it is still served by the Rhondda rail line to Cardiff, giving easy access to the city.
Today Porth combines reminders of its mining past with active community life: nearby attractions such as the Rhondda Heritage Park, strong local rugby and choral traditions, independent shops and markets, and regeneration projects aimed at diversifying the local economy after the decline of coal. The steep valley landscape also offers accessible walking routes and a sense of close-knit community that remains characteristic of the South Wales Valleys.
