Treorchy sits in the steep-sided valley of the Rhondda within Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales, and grew up as a classic Victorian coal-mining town. Its streets of terraced houses, chapels and former colliery sites reflect the 19th- and 20th-century boom that shaped the local landscape, with hills and wooded ridges offering access to valley walking and views back down to the valley floor.
Although the pits have long closed, the community remains lively and proud of its traditions: choirs and rugby are important social fixtures, most famously the Treorchy male voice choir, and there has been steady regeneration with local shops, services and people commuting to nearby towns and Cardiff. The area combines a strong sense of heritage with ongoing social and economic change typical of post-industrial South Wales valleys.
