Treorchy sits in the upper reaches of the Rhondda Fawr valley in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales. It grew rapidly in the 19th century with the coal boom, and the steep wooded hills, terraced streets and miners’ welfare buildings still speak of that industrial past while the A4058 valley road threads through the town.
The community is proud of a strong cultural life - the internationally recognised Treorchy Male Choir, a lively rugby scene centred on Treorchy RFC, and regular local events - and has shown notable resilience since the pits closed, with a compact high street of shops, cafés and pubs and plenty of walking routes into the surrounding hills that draw visitors from nearby Pontypridd and beyond.
