St. Athan sits on the coastal plain of the Vale of Glamorgan, a few miles west of Barry and within easy commuting distance of Cardiff. The parish combines flat farmland, small hamlets and stretches of coastline looking out over the Bristol Channel, with the River Thaw running nearby and historic sites such as St Donat's Castle and a medieval parish church giving a strong sense of local history.
Economically and socially the village has long been shaped by defence and aviation: RAF St Athan (now a mixed MOD and aerospace site) has been the area's biggest employer and has driven local training and maintenance work, even as the community retains a rural character with village halls, pubs and agricultural activity. The result is a compact, close‑knit place where military heritage, small‑scale farming and links to the nearby towns combine to shape village life.
