Easington Colliery is a compact coastal parish on the Durham coast in County Durham, sitting above the cliffs that look out over the North Sea. It grew up as a purpose-built pit village to service the local coal seams and still bears the imprint of that industrial past in its terraces, miners' memorials and strong local identity, while coastal footpaths and the rugged shoreline give the area a distinctly maritime feel.
After the colliery closed the community experienced economic hardship and has since seen waves of regeneration, with nearby energy infrastructure such as the Easington gas terminal playing a part in the local economy; the village is also closely linked socially and economically with nearby towns such as Peterlee. Local clubs, churches and commemorations keep the mining heritage alive, making the parish an example of a community reshaping itself after the end of deep coal working.
